In partnership with Bishop Museum and the J. Watumull Planetarium, a new and exciting program called "Wayfinders: Waves, Winds and Stars" was shot, co-written, produced and edited by Eleven Past Studios' film and video division, 1001 Stories. The sequel to Bishop Museum's "Explorers of Polynesia," "Wayfinders" features footage of the Hokule'a and live-interactive segments to tell the story of Polynesian navigation like never before. The program required a unique logo for its title card and future promotional materials in preparation for international distribution and promotion in other planetariums.
Eleven Past Studios was tasked to provide new concepts inclusive of modifications to the previous Wayfinders mark. We explored three approaches: tradition/roots, journey, and generations. The traditions concept was inspired by traditional navigation of wind and wave patterns and star mapping influenced by Polynesians; journey represented the use of the North Star over instruments; generations focused on the importance of perpetuating the ways and lessons of Polynesian voyaging practices to future generations.
Varying typefaces with unique characteristics were researched in tandem with the final mark. Eventually, "generations" was selected for final output. "Generations" utilizes a male profile, representative of the wayfinder, hidden within the sails of the Hokule'a. He looks towards the stars and seemingly towards the future. As the final mark, 2 color, 1 color and secondary color palettes were developed for brand use in conjunction with horizontal (web) and print/video (vertical) lockups.
As part of Kaua'i Heritage Properties' brand refresh, the new mark, color palette and secondary elements were applied across the board in both offline and online materials inclusive of:
